11 tips for green spring cleaning!!!

With spring just around the corner, bringing in fresh air and getting rid of dust and winter dirt may be on your to-do list. But before you rush to start your spring cleaning done, it’s important to know which cleaning products are safest to use.

Many household cleaners contain toxic ingredients, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agencyestimates only a fraction of the more than 80,000 registered chemicals have gone through complete testing to see if they might harm our health. Chemicals in cleaning products can enter our bodies via the air we breathe, through our skin and through the water we drink. Because so many registered chemicals have not undergone complete testing, it’s wise to be cautious in choosing which chemical cleaners to use in your home. Luckily, you don’t have to spend a lot of money for green cleaning supplies. Vinegar and baking soda are nontoxic household materials which make effective and inexpensive cleaners. Try a baking soda and water paste to clean the oven and tackle toilet stains. Clean and shine mirrors, windows and floors with a vinegar and water solution.

Follow these tips to safely clean your home and protect your family from exposure to chemicals:

  1. Use products free of chlorine, ammonia, synthetic solvents and surfactants, and artificial fragrances and dyes.
  2. Use products made with plant-based ingredients instead of petroleum-based ingredients. Examples of good ingredients to look for include lemon juice, lemongrass, limonene (extract from orange peels) and tea tree oil.
  3. Try to purchase green cleaners that are certified by Green Seal or EcoLogo, which ensure products meet environmental standards.
  4. Use pump sprays instead of aerosol dispensers.
  5. Clean with windows and doors open so you don’t trap air pollution inside your home.
  6. Never mix bleach with ammonia, vinegar or other acids. These combinations can produce very dangerous gases.
  7. Avoid air fresheners. Use essential oils instead. Or, place a few cloves and orange rind in a small pot of boiling water and simmer to fill the house with a natural, delicious scent.
  8. Use a mechanical snake to unclog a drain.
  9. Use vacuums with HEPA filters that trap fine particles.
  10. Use carpet cleaning services that use cleaners that are low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and irritants.
  11. Try making your own natural cleaner, such as the recipe below.

Keeping Your House Clean Without Harsh Chemicals: HOW IT CAN EFFECT BABIES, AND CHILDREN

When you have a new baby, your house might seem a lot dirtier than it did before. The first time your little one stuffs a dust bunny or a desiccated housefly in her mouth is often a low point in parenting.

Before you start scrubbing every surface in sight, consider that obsessive cleaning with caustic household cleaners has its own drawbacks. Harsh household cleaners can affect a baby's eyes, airways, skin, and more.

"Parents need to know that there can be a trade-off between a sterilized kitchen and their baby's health," says Sonya Lunder, MPH, a senior analyst at the Environmental Working Group in Washington, D.C.

There is good news. By making simple changes and practicing child-safe cleaning, you can keep your home clean without exposing your baby to unnecessary risks. For an exhausted mom, it’s a win-win: a healthier baby without loads of extra housework.

What's the Problem With Household Cleaners?

Household cleaners with harsh ingredients don't only kill germs and get out tough stains. They can affect your baby's health in a number of ways.

  • Eczema. A baby's skin is sensitive, and studies have found that irritants and allergens in household cleaners and detergents can cause skin irritation.
  • Airway irritation. Powerful fumes from household cleaners can irritate your baby's airways, making allergy or asthma symptoms worse. Some cleaning chemicals in schools have been linked with higher rates of asthma, says Lunder.
  • Eye irritation. Household cleaner fumes can also irritate your baby's eyes, causing redness and watering. If splashed directly into the eyes, some cleaners can cause serious damage.
  • Allergies. Some researchers believe that having a home that's too clean can increase the long-term risk of allergies in a child. It's called the hygiene hypothesis. Without some exposure to germs, a child's immune system might not develop normally. Instead, it becomes hypersensitive and begins to overreact to harmless allergens, like pollen or dander.
  • Poisoning. Every year, more than a million kids under age 5 swallow poisons like household cleaners, sometimes with devastating effects.
  • Unknown health effects. Some household cleaners have fragrances that contain chemicals like phthalates. While we don't know what their health effects are for sure, some studies have found a possible connection between phthalates and disrupted hormone levels.

"What's surprising to so many parents is that we don't have good safety testing for a lot of the chemicals we use every day," Kenneth Bock, MD, pediatric neurotoxicologist and codirector of the Rhinebeck Health Center in Rhinebeck, N.Y. "We don't really know what they might be doing to our kids." To be cautious, many parents try to reduce their use of household cleaners that contain harsh chemicals.

Keep Your Child Safe from Household Cleaners and Chemicals

There are things that can be done to reduce the risk of your child tampering with dangerous cleaning products at home. Simple things like closing the door to utility rooms and putting an affordable doorknob guard on the door could save you a trip to the emergency room.

If a cleaning product or chemical is harmful or you need to be careful using it, it will likely have one or more of these words on the label: Caution, Danger, Toxic, or Warning!!!

AT TAHOE GREEN HOMECARE, WE HOPE TO HELP ELIMINATE USING CLEANING PRODUCTS ENTIRELY... HOWEVER, IF YOU HAVE SOME IN YOUR HOME.... HERE ARE SOME HELPFUL TIPS...

Helpful Tips for Safety at Home:

Tip 1: Cleaning materials should always be stored out of the reach of children and pets.

Tip 2: Install child-proof latches on under-sink cabinets in the kitchen and bathroom. Even if cleaning materials are no longer stored there, chemical smells may linger and could be dangerous to a child if they play under sinks.

Tip 3: Store laundry products on high shelves because many detergents can cause rashes or itching on a child's sensitive skin.

Tip 4: Never leave a bottle or container of cleaning supplies open and unattended. Always close and put away the cleaning supply if you are interrupted. You do not want any temptation sitting around that may harm your child.

Tip 5: When cleaning, take only the proper amount you need from the container, seal the container back up and store the container away immediately. Use the proper equipment for handling the cleaning supply material, as recommended on the label. If the label says wear protective gear, gloves or goggles, do so to reduce harm to yourself and family.

Tip 6: When you are done cleaning, properly dispose of paper towels and rags that touched the cleaning chemicals.

Tip 7: Keep a list of emergency telephone numbers. Many cleaning products and chemicals have instructions on what to do if the product is used incorrectly, resulting in emergency. Create and keep a first-aid kit that includes emergency-wash liquids. In the first-aid kid, keep a list of telephone numbers for:

  • National Poison Control, 1-800-222-1222
  • The nearest hospital
  • A local ambulance service
  • Your family doctor

The next time you bring household cleaners and chemicals home, familiarize yourself with their labels and be aware of where your products are kept so you can help children stay safe.

IDEALLY, We recommend calling on Green Cleaners to do the job with safe products for you, your children, pets and the planet...

Eco-Friendly Cleaners vs Regular Household Cleaners

Regular household cleaners rely upon such chemicals as chlorine bleach and ammonia to clean and disinfect your home. Although these products do clean effectively, they are not good for the environment and can even pose health risks to humans and animals. Eco-friendly cleaners rely upon citrus-based solvents, vinegar, essential oils and natural abrasives to clean and disinfect without harmful chemicals.

Eco-friendly cleaners often come with a higher price tag, but you may worry that they will not work well. On the whole, rest assured that they are effective. Buyers should keep in mind that some eco-friendly cleaners may require more elbow grease than standard household cleaners, and they should look for the right cleaner for the job. Good quality cleaning supplies, including mops and scrub brushes, will improve the effectiveness of your cleaning needs.

We use eco-friendly cleaning Products because we consider your home to be composed of thee things, your body, the home you live in, and the planet we all share. By using our services, you are participating in the Green Movement by caring for all three, not to mention your family, and your pets. Take care of yourself by raising your standards. Eliminate toxic chemicals from your life, but keep your home clean, and pure. We are here for you!

Why use an eco-friendly house cleaning service?

eco-friendly house cleaners

A green house cleaning service cleans homes using healthy, environmentally friendly cleaning products, usually on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. One of the major benefits to this kind of business is that conventional cleaning solutions can produce noxious fumes, especially when combined with fumes from other chemical-based cleansers.  This leads to chronic health conditions for workers in conventional cleaning services and potentially for the occupants of the home.  Thus, it is healthier for you, your family, your pets, your home, and this planet as a whole.

The efficacy of modern green cleaning materials, is now unquestioned for all but the most heinous cleaning jobs, and many cleaning companies have been using products like these successfully for many years.

Why is it Spring Cleaning time?

Every home should have a deep spring clean at this time of year!

There are many mold spores that can gather from a heavy winter like the one we just had in Tahoe!

Spring cleaning can also remove dust mites, and the microscopic particles sloughing off bodies from skin and hair, and our homes are always giving off dust from the structure itself. Furniture and carpets also gather all of these particles. Dust can seep through cracks in windows, doors and ceilings. This really begins to accumulate over time and be hard on your health.. It is important to remove this from your environment and reintroduce cleanliness, with our eco, friendly products that disinfect, and leave your home with a light, heavenly scent of organic essential oils.

In deep cleaning we vacuum under and around furniture, while baseboards, wipe light switches, fronts of cabinets and handles, where things may have gotten sticky over time! We do a thorough job of cobwebbing, and dusting up high, like selling fans, and beams. We detail dust the home, in the nooks and crannies, and open windows changing the air in your home! Refresh, renew and help you feel organized and rejuvenated...

We are here for you, please call us today to schedule your spring cleaning!!! Why wait?

Why use non-toxic chemicals?

Today's modern home is loaded with toxic and polluting substances designed to make domestic life easier.

The cost of these commercial, chemical-based products can be high -- long term health concerns for the family, and environmental pollution caused by their manufacture and disposal. In the US, for example, 1 in 3 people suffer from allergies, asthma, sinusitis or bronchitis (US National Center for Health Statistics). Treatment for these conditions should include reducing synthetic chemicals in the home environment.

A growing number of commercial non-toxic home cleaning products are also available, as healthier and environmentally responsible alternatives. Your use of these products helps promote the growth of green businesses which are contributing to a sustainable economy.
